From Keck Science Center to Pitzer

 walking on road (Keck)

walking on sand (Pitzer)

Pitzer campus

Recording Setup: This sound was recorded on Thursday, October 7, 2021, at 12:00 AM on the route from Keck to Pitzer. The TASCAM DR-40 microphone was carried while I walked.

Description: The recordings were split into three parts in order to show the difference between how texture shaped the sound. For example, the sound of walking on the road is hard, heavy and precise, while the sound of walking on the sand is scattered and light. The recording was done outside and in action. The keynote is the natural sound (bird, wind), the signal is the sound of passing cars.

Keck Science Center 1st Floor Public Area

Recording Setup: This sound was recorded on Tuesday, October 5, 2021, at 11:00 AM at the first floor of the Keck Science Center. The TASCAM DR-40 microphone was put on the public seating area facing professors’ offices.

Description: There were a couple of students around, with two professors chatting while their door was open. The recording was done inside the building, the human voice is clear, the sound has less mass and is more transparent. The keynote is the underlying machine sound, the signal is the sound of opening and closing the door.

Keck Science Center Outdoor

Recording Setup: This sound was recorded on Tuesday, October 5, 2021, at 10:51 AM outside of the Keck Science Center. The TASCAM DR-40 microphone was put on the public seating area near the entrance of the building.

Description: There were a couple of students around, there was also one girl talking to her friend on the phone nearby throughout the recording. Since the recording was done outdoors, the human voice is not as clear, the sound has more mass and passes further away. The keynote is the underlying machine sound, the signal is the “beep” sound from the truck and the sound of opening and closing the door.
